The Start of Discussion: Jellicoe Road

Note from Tami: First off, I wanted to warn the readers, Jellicoe Road can be a bit confusing at the beginning. Stick with it, you won't be sorry. When I first picked up the book, I almost put it down after the first few chapters (which is so unlike me). I couldn't keep track of all of the characters and I had trouble keeping the time frame of events straight. PLEASE keep reading. You will be rewarded. Everything becomes clear and hopefully you will be as moved by this book as I was.

Now on to our regularly schedule discussion questions! Since we're seven days into the month and probably started reading Jellicoe Road, I thought I would post a few discussion questions to think about while you're reading. These are just basic questions that we will be discussing for each book. We will get more specific with our discussion later in the month. Please remember, if you have finished Jellicoe Road, do NOT post any spoilers for those who have yet to finish.

If you visit the comments, you'll notice that I've also posted each question there, as well as this post. If you want to join in on the discussion for any of the questions, please just hit the "post reply" option next to the question. That way, we can keep each discussion a separate thread and reply to individuals. Remember, please no spoilers in this discussion. We can talk about the end of the book in the last discussion post of the month.

Also, if you haven't already, please read the FAQ and Rules. They will always be posted in the sidebar if you need to find them at any time.

1. How does the setting figure into the book? Is the setting a character? Does it come to life? Did you feel you were experiencing the time and place in which the book was set?
2. What motivated the story? Was the novel plot-driven or character-driven?
3. What are some of the book's themes? How important were they?
4. How are the book's images symbolically significant? Do the images help to develop the plot, or help to define characters?
5. What was your first impression of the characters?

Please don't be shy. Make sure to join in the discussion. If there is another question you'd like others to consider while reading the book, please feel free to post them in the comments section as a new comment.

If you haven't picked up your copy of Jellicoe Road yet, don't worry. There is still plenty of time. We will be reading and discussing the book throughout the month!

Jellicoe Road meant everything to Taylor. It was special and very important to her. She lost her mother there but also found Hannah and a stable life. The 5 friends lost and met love on Jellicoe Road. It's where they would meet all together every year. It was a place that had special meaning to so many. So yes I think the setting was a character.
I have to agree. This is the first book we've read where the setting did feel like a character to me. Everything came back to Jellicoe Road.
Totally agree Tina. Jellicoe Road is more than just the title of the book, or the setting, it is the books meaning. Taylor, and the other friends, have lost, found, loved, hated on that road. Isn't it amazing that something so normal, so average as a road can have so much meaning?

Heather, you know, before you said this I didn't even think about it being the first book we've read where the setting is a character. The others have been so character heavy, it's nice to see it from the other side of the road, so to speak (and yes, I meant that line to be that cheesy).

I thought it was character-driven. What kept me reading was insane curiosity. From the very beginning I knew that the 5 friends would tie in with Taylor. But how? I couldn't wait to put the puzzle together. I loved hearing the stories of the 5 friends and getting to know them.
It's funny, Tina. When I read Jellicoe Road for the first time, I sat through the first part so confused that I almost put it down. The only reason that kept me reading was my curiosity (like you), but also, I don't usually quit on a book if I've started it. I knew Jellicoe Road had to be more than the confusion I first felt.

To say that Jellicoe Road doesn't really have a plot, is harsh, but is true when you think about it. The plot IS the characters and following them through their journey of love, death, family and friendship.
I was confused in the beginning to. It took about 150 pages in for me to really get into the book.
3. What are some of the book's themes? How important were they?
4. How are the book's images symbolically significant? Do the images help to develop the plot, or help to define characters?

The image I keep coming back to is the Prayer Tree. The tree is all about connections. From the Prayer Tree you can see everyone's territories, so that's one. There are also all of the writings on the tree, so you have a connection between past and present. And finally the 5 held the tree as being special and it's at that same spot that our modern day characters really come together.
5. What was your first impression of the characters?

Taylor is the only one I can really comment on so far because I haven't figured anyone else out yet. lol Taylor strikes me as a rather complex person with deep emotional issues. She shows the world a facade of strength, but deep inside she's really vulnerable. She has an understandable fear of abandonment.
Taylor isn't very different from a lot of the teens we've read so far with the book club. Ever...Saffron...Emer...Taylor, they've each lost something in their lives and have major emotional issues. Ever lost her family, Saffron lost herself (so to speak), Emer lost her family and Taylor...we'll she lost her family (don't want to spoil here) but also didn't really belong. Again, going back to the previous books we've read, each characters lost something major at the beginning of the books, but found that they were strong than that loss in the end. All the character really are about perseverance.

I know that you're now finished with the book, Heather, and w/o giving anything major away (until our end discussion) but do you feel like you better understand Taylor?
Oh definitely! And yes Taylor is similar in many ways to the other young women we've read about. Like them, Taylor finds her strength through the journey she undertakes.

When I referred to her as showing a facade of strength, that was more of the whole "first impression" thing. I would also say though that at the beginning not even Taylor realized the strength she had inside. Until Hannah leaves Taylor never had her strength tested.
I wasn't fond of Taylor and her story line. So I didn't get a good impression of her. I understand her fears of abandonment but Hannah was there for her and Taylor was not very grateful for it. She was stand offish and a terrible friend. I also think Hannah should have been more honest about who she really was. It might of helped Taylor be more content with life. Instead of walking around with a chip on her shoulder.
Jonah went from a hard core Cadet who beats up Ben for no reason to a sweet heart? Not a very believe able character.
I liked Ben. He was loyal to Taylor even when he was scared. But when he needed to be tough, size didn't matter.
I was more interested in the 5 friends. They built this amazing bond with each other. From tragedy they found love with each other.
Tina, since Taylor is the center of the story, did you end up liking the book?

I loved the 5 friends as well, and following them through the journey of the book. I think that's what wowed me, how everything came together in the end.
I did like the book, but it took awhile to feel this way. It was the 5 friends that really intrigued me. Realizing their was a connection with Taylor was even more intriguing. I agree, I was wowed with how everything came together.
